sculpture
Using garments to explore the fragility and the presence of the body in an indirect way, Tiziana creates porcelain, cast glass and mixed media pieces reminiscent perhaps of the classical Italian sculptures of the Renaissance or of ancient Rome, yet one of her major influences has been Guiseppe Penone of the 1960’s Arte Povera movement.
Tiziana has always been interested in using the body as a reference point for her work but not in a direct way - she is intrigued by the way clothes surround and contain the body like a second skin.
She is fascinated by the way porcelain picks up very fine detail and when fired produces a bony fossil-like quality in the work. Yet the pieces retain their movement and dynamism freezing and preserving the image, seeming to echo the life that the original cloth once contained.
The pieces shown here are a mixture - her latest work using tea-bags cast in porcelain is playful and colourful, whilst her other pieces utilise the bone-like white of fired porcelain, reflecting the more sober side of her work. Some of the pieces shown here are also an extension of Tiziana's work using ceramics and glass - adding and mixing photographic elements with screen printed decals, successfully bringing together several layers of complex imagery.
